On November 15, 2017 PMI’s Vertical Rescue Solutions (VRS) Training Manager, Martin Barnett will guide the first-ever expedition to the South Pole powered solely by clean energy technologies. Pigeon Mountain Industries (PMI) is a rope manufacturing company; its Denver office is home to VRS—the training arm of PMI. Martin will join father and son duo, Robert and Barney Swan, on the South Pole Energy Challenge (SPEC), as part of a greater goal to increase renewable energy use in everyday life. The project, titled 2041, was founded by explorer Robert Swan, OBE. Robert was the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles, and was inspired by these trips in the 80s to protect Antarctica and our planet for future generations.
The name 2041 comes from the year that the renegotiation of moratorium on mining in Antarctica will take place. This moratorium designates Antarctica as a “natural reserve, devoted to peace and science”, protecting it from exploitation until it is renegotiated in 2041. Robert Swan and his team's mission is to “inspire governments, educators, businesses, investors, and individuals to take concrete and measurable actions to shift the way they think about, legislate and use energy.” Robert emphasizes the importance of creating a movement around the preservation of this pristine continent by promoting renewable energy and raising awareness about the detrimental effects its deterioration can have on our environment. He advocates for the expansion of renewable energy projects with a goal of eliminating the need to drill in Antarctica by 2041.
SPEC is a 600-mile, eight-week journey on skis to the South Pole using only renewable energy. By demonstrating these innovative technologies in one of earth’s harshest environments, they hope to illuminate the importance of clean energy and demonstrate ways to make significant reductions in energy use in people’s businesses, communities and lifestyles. Robert, Barney, Martin and filmmaker, Kyle O’Donoghue will embark on this first-of-its-kind expedition with greater intentions than just adventure.
